Team Sarcoma Reading
Team Sarcoma Reading is led by Jennifer Weller and Lindsay Burkhart, whose mother, Donna Burkhart, passed away with uterine leiomyosarcoma. Jennifer and Lindsay are determined to support sarcoma patients and their families and to raise money for leiomyosarcoma research. They are working to organize a set of fun and meaningful events that give the Reading community a chance to come together for a good cause.
Team Sarcoma Reading held their first event in August at Rita's Italian Ice in St. Lawrence, and they raised more than $800. It was a great start for the team.
An Event in 2013
Team Reading is participating in a bus trip to the Mohegan Sun Casino on July 14th. Buses will leave the Exeter Lowe’s parking lot at 8:00am and return around 5:00pm. One bus will benefit the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Neuro-Oncology Program and one will benefit leiomyosarcoma research through the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. Reservations are $35 per person (which includes $25.00 free slot play, $10.00 food voucher, driver gratuity and snacks/beverages provided on the bus).
About the Cause
Because sarcomas are rare cancers, little progress has been made in their treatment in the last few decades. Sarcomas are often aggressive and difficult to treat. Team Sarcoma provides a way for communities to come together in positive action and do something about these rare diseases.
About the Initiative
The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative works to award sarcoma research grants to expert investigators around the world. The Initiative maintains an extremely low overhead of 2-3% per year. Thus, 97-98% of the funds we receive go directly to support sarcoma research.
